I love Spring but the weather can be a little tricky when it comes to choosing your outfit. What’s a girl to do? A girl needs spring transition pieces. There are 5 transition pieces I think every woman needs in her closet for spring. With any of these pieces, you can create numerous spring outfits while staying warm if needed. Read on to see what they are!

A Jean Jacket
Don’t you just love that jean jackets are trending this season? But you know, a classic jean jacket never goes out of style which makes it a staple spring transition piece for your closet. I recently purchased this Levi’s jean jacket from Amazon. It has the perfect amount of stretch. Sometimes jean jackets can be stiff and uncomfortable. But give this baby a wash and it’s perfect!
You can find jean jackets in different colors, but I think a regular denim color and a white jean jacket are all you need for your spring outfits. If you only want one jean jacket in your closet, go with the denim color. I think it’s a little more versatile.
I did find white jean jackets at Old Navy, and Amazon for you to view. Also, off-white denim seems to be on trend this season and I’m really liking it. Whether it will fade or continue into other seasons is a gamble. But Old Navy does have this cute cropped denim jacket in off-white which would be great for your spring outfits.
Cardigans are a must for taking you through every season. Think darker cardigans for fall transition and lighter or bright colored cardigans for your spring transition pieces.
I love this bright color block cardi from Amazon and think it’s The Perfect Transition Cardigan. I wore it in the winter, as you can tell in the picture below by my booties, but I’ve worn it several times this spring and always get compliments!
I wanted you to have a nice selection of cardigans to choose from so I found some other options for your viewing pleasure.
This blue color block cardigan from Macy’s is super cute. I wouldn’t necessarily style it like it is in the picture below, but I think the cardigan itself is nice. And at the time of this blog post, it’s on major sale! I would probably wear it with a blue or white shirt and white jeans for a super cute spring outfit.
I just added this grey hooded cardigan to my online shopping cart. How fun would it be with a graphic tee, or a bright shirt under it?
While I wouldn’t pay full price for the mauve dip dyed cardigan by Lucky Brand, I really like it and would definitely consider purchasing it if it was on sale!
How pretty is this pink shirttail cardigan from Loft Outlet or this lavender one from Target? The pink would be gorgeous with jeans or white pants and could be worn dressy or casual for a spring outfit. I think the lavender would pair better with white pants but could still be worn dressy or casual. And bonus, pastels are trending this season for spring!
I’ve really enjoyed this tie-dyed cardigan I bought from Macy’s, because I can wear it with white pants. There’s just something about adding white pants to a sweater that makes it feel more like a spring outfit for me, even if it is cold outside.
Unfortunately, they only have size small left at Macy’s in the navy, but I did find it in the tan one shown below as well as a few other options for ya. Any of these would be great additions to your closet for spring transition pieces.
When I’m speaking of cropped cardigans for the 40 and over woman, I’m talking about cardigans that hit just at the top of our hips and below our waist.
When I first saw cropped sweaters trending, I thought they would never look good on me. I assumed they would draw attention to my hips. On a shopping trip with my daughter, I decided to try one just to see. I loved it so much that I bought it! I think because these have a boxier look to them, they don’t draw as much attention to the hip area.
For your shopping pleasure I’ve rounded up some cropped sweaters I think would look good for us 40 and over girls and would work nicely for your spring outfits. I’m especially loving the last two from Loft Outlet. You can’t beat a tangerine color for spring!
Thin, Lightweight Sweaters or Bright Colored Sweaters
Every single spring I switch out my closet too early. I put away all my winter clothes and BOOM, it’s cold again! Does this happen to you? That’s where thin, lightweight sweaters or those cardigans are so helpful to have in your closet for spring outfits and transition pieces. They don’t have the bulk or weight of a winter sweater, but can still give you a little warmth on a chilly spring day.
I can’t tell you how many times I have worn this color block sweater from Amazon. I love it pairing it with these jeans from Loft.
I’ve also gotten a lot of wear from this pink leopard print sweater by Sugar Hill Brighton. It’s a little on the expensive side, but I purchased it from the boutique, A Loft Shop based in Padstow, England. I’ve gotten to know these ladies through an Instagram group I participate in. I love supporting other women small business owners, don’t you?
I also browsed around for some other thin spring transition sweaters for you.
I love this multi-colored striped one from Kut and this mauve and cream one by Lucky Brand. The multi-striped one has all the great pastel colors perfect for a spring outfit. Now if it would just go on sale.
You can’t go wrong with a nice white sweater like this dolman sleeve one from Loft Outlet. I also love this green drop shoulder sweater from Loft Outlet. In fact, it’s sitting in my online shopping cart!
Any of these would make perfect spring transition pieces.
Heavier Weight Sweaters in Bright Colors
If you still need a thicker-weight sweater in the spring, which we all do from time to time, aim for brighter spring colors like this citron sweater from Macy’s.
While they don’t have this citron color available anymore, I did find this striped one that I love and it’s on major sale too! It also comes in a couple of different colors.
I just ordered this lavender boatneck sweater from Talbots during their Red Hanger sale. Nothing says spring outfit like a lavender sweater.
This puff sleeve sweatshirt in this pretty salmon color from Loft Outlet is another great choice for a spring outfit when you need some warmth.
You can’t go wrong with a navy & white striped sweater for spring like this one from Macy’s.
Again, brighter colors can be worn with white pants to give you more of that spring vibe or you can toss on denim jeans.
Blazers, Bombers, or Moto Jackets
You can’t go wrong with a blazer, a bomber, or a moto jacket as a spring transition piece. I have one moto jacket in a pink color, one bomber jacket in a lilac color and several blazers. While bomber jackets & moto jackets are fun, I think a blazer is more versatile.
I’ve styled this white blazer with a graphic tee and denim capris for a casual vibe and a gray snakeskin print tee with jeans and white mules for a more business casual look.
Here are some other blazers I really like. I’m just waiting for this pink floral blazer from Loft Outlet to go on sale and it’s mine!
Bomber Style Jackets
Blazers aren’t for everyone and that’s totally fine. You should feel comfortable and confident in whatever you wear! That’s where a good bomber jacket comes in. Since my bomber jacket isn’t available anymore, I found some others I thought were cute. I love the floral one from Macy’s. While you’d be more limited with what and how to wear it, doesn’t it just say, “Spring?”
I’m also loving the white Levi’s Bomber Jacket from Nordstrom Rack. It comes in other colors, like tan which would be a wonderful neutral to have in your closet.
Or you could go with a traditional army green bomber jacket like the Levi’s one below. It also comes in white, peach, navy, and black. It’s from Nordstrom Rack which can sell out quickly, so if you like it I would grab it now.
The last jacket is a cropped utility-style jacket from Target that comes in brown, a beautiful spring sage color, and this buttery tan pictured below.
Moto jackets have a little more edge to them due to their biker-like style. The majority of moto-style jackets come in leather, faux leather, suede, or faux suede. Personally, I don’t like suede or faux suede material for spring. I think it feels and looks too wintery. This can limit your choice of moto jackets for spring, but they are still a great addition to your closet for transition pieces.
While a denim jacket is a must for a spring transition, another nice option is a denim shirt. Denim shirts can be a lighter material and a little more versatile as well. You can wear them buttoned up as a shirt or wear them open over a graphic tee.
I recently purchased this fun tie-dye denim shirt from Land’s End. The website says their stock is running low, so grab it now if you like it. They have other denim colors available too.
And there you have it! 5 spring transition pieces you need in your closet. Which ones do you already own? Let me know in the comments below!
And until next time…
